In the first couple of months of being a mother, you’re trying to figure out what just happened. You are overcome with joy and confusion, trying to make sense of everything. And then, the next few months, it’s shuffling to adapt to your new normal, your new body, your relationships, the thoughts and chaos in your mind, and this amazing gift that made its way into your arms and heart. And then you come to a place where you seem to have your head on straight just a bit more, enough to come up for air to ask yourself, OK, how can I enjoy this as much as possible? I believe motherhood is always work, even when it is enjoyable. I deem it necessary not to wake up and hope you have a good day but to take those next steps when you can finally have that intimate conversation with yourself: how can I make this journey of motherhood the best it can be, not just for my children but for myself? Our internal happiness pours onto our family. So I think, in some sense, we have that duty to ourselves to build that joy from the inside out. But it doesn’t happen overnight, and there is never one single act. It’s an everyday choice that needs to be made over and over again.
